My name is JaShawn Combs, and I am honored to be a candidate for the Head Steward (Chair) in CAPS-UAW District 1. I am a State Scientist at Caltrans in San Bernardino and have been here for 7 years. I currently serve as a local representative, where I have had the privilege of enforcing our CAPS-UAW and our rights as union members. I have always been passionate about union organizing and coming together as a collective to get what we deserve. My journey with the CAPS-UAW began a few years ago when I first joined as a CAPS member before our strike in 2023, and before we were CAPS-UAW. Over the years, I have been actively involved in the Contract Action Team (CAT), Catalyst Committee, Bylaws Committee, UAW Region 6 Just Transition Committee, and Political Action Working Group, which have deepened my understanding and commitment to our fellow union members. All the committees and groups I have been a part of or helped have developed numerous skills to assist people, especially those who need it the most.
If elected, my primary goals are to organize District 1, particularly those departments and workers who have not had much interaction with the union, to fight for better wages for all workers, and to defend our contract. By focusing on organizing and collective action, we can achieve significant progress and continue to grow as a union.
Thank you for considering my candidacy. I am excited about the opportunity to serve as District 1 Head Steward (Chair) and to work together towards a prosperous future. I look forward to the opportunity to contribute my skills and passion to our shared success. Thank you for your time and consideration.
