Emily Duncan for District 1 Head Steward (Recording Secretary)

My name is Emily, and I am honored to be a candidate for the Head Steward (recording secretary) at CAPS-UAW District 1. I am a Senior Environmental Scientist at the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board and have worked there for 6 years. I currently serve as a local representative, where I have had the privilege of enforcing our hard fought contract through paycheck grievances and supporting other members as they navigate workplace violations. My journey with the organization began four years ago when I first joined as a member of our union. Over the years, I have been actively involved in the Contract Action Team, member representation, picketing while on strike in 2023, practice pickets, rallies, membership meetings, observing bargaining, and the Political Action Working Group which have deepened my understanding and commitment to our community.

With 15 years of experience in environmental sciences, I have developed a deep understanding of the power of collaboration and teamwork. My career has included roles such as graduate student, postdoctoral researcher and senior environmental scientist, where I was responsible for conducting research experiments, analyzing data, and managing research contracts.. My involvement with the union has included get out the vote efforts for our contract and side letter agreements, membership meetings, political action work, and member representation, allowing me to gain insights into our operations and member needs. These experiences have equipped me with the skills needed to contribute effectively to our organization.

I am known for my leadership in the workplace, dedication and teamwork, and I am committed to bringing these values to my role as head steward recording secretary of district one. My approach is always to develop relationships with other members in order to better support various member needs. I provide regular opportunities for those in my workplace to connect during in person conversation and solidarity breaks, which I believe is essential for fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.

If elected, my primary goals are to enhance member engagement, train more members to become stewards in our district and strengthen our union democracy through increasing member empowerment. I believe that by focusing on enhancing member engagement and education, we can achieve significant progress and continue to grow as a community. I am particularly focused on addressing contract enforcement, and I have a plan to empower more members through the stewardship program and spreading knowledge through ‘know your rights training’.

Thank you for considering my candidacy. I am excited about the opportunity to serve District one of CAPS UAW and to work together towards a prosperous future. I look forward to the possibility of contributing my skills and passion to our shared success. Thank you for your time and consideration.
